How to update the resident status of PAN for an NRI & PIO account?

To update the resident status, follow these steps:

1. Ensure your residential status is Non-Resident on the Income Tax Department (ITD) website:

   - Log in to the ITD website.

   - Verify that your residential status is set to Non-Resident.

  

2. Submit the required documents to the Joint Accounts Office (JAO):

   - Provide a copy of your PAN Card.

   - Submit one of the following documents:

     - Copy of passport indicating NRI status.

     - Copy of PIO card issued by the Government of India.

     - Copy of OCI card issued by the Government of India.

     - Copy of other national or citizenship identification number or taxpayer identification, attested by the Indian embassy/consulate or authorised officials of overseas branches of registered Indian banks.

  

3. Change your residential status to Non-Resident on the ITD website:

   - Navigate to the relevant section on the ITD website.

   - Follow the provided instructions to update your residential status to Non-Resident.

   - After successful KYC verification, expect a turnaround time of approximately 48 hours for the process to complete.

  Note that reactivation turnaround time may vary depending on the response from the KRA.
