What is a Basic Services Demat Account (BSDA), and how can one be opened at 5Paisa?

A Basic Services Demat Account (BSDA) provides limited services to retail investors at a minimal cost. The Annual Maintenance Charge (AMC) is based on the value holdings in the account as per the number of accounts held by the user with multiple depositories.

The Basic Services Demat Account can be opened by anyone at 5Paisa. Here is how the charges for BSDA are determined:

The value of securities should not exceed Rs 2 lakhs at any time. Exceeding the Rs 2 Lakh limit will automatically convert the BSDA to an FSDA (Full Service Demat Account). In an FSDA, the charges are applicable according to a regular account holder, i.e., Rs 25+ 18% GST from the time the account is converted to FSDA.

However, if more than one depository is added to the account, the charges will be Rs 25 + 18% GST regardless of the holdings. Have a look at the following table for better understanding:

Slab

Highest Holding Value

AMC (exclusive of GST)

1

Up to ₹50,000

No AMC

2

₹50,001 to ₹2,00,000

₹8 per Month

3

Above ₹2,00,000

₹25 per Month

For example:

Consider that a 5Paisa account was opened on 12th January 2025. The highest holdings for the 1st month (by 12th February) were ₹1,50,000. The AMC would then be ₹8 per month, due on 12th February 2025.

Now, for the second month, the maximum holdings were ₹2,50,000. The AMC charges would be ₹25, and ultimately, the BSDA account will be converted to FSDA.
